John Mapes, Program Coordinator, Battery and Visual Designer
This is John’s 11th year on the design team and staff with Pulse. He is a full-time percussion designer and educator involved in teaching over 20 high school and independent percussion programs in Southern California since 1997. He received his Bachelor of Arts in percussion from California State University Long Beach, in the spring of 2000.

He has been the Percussion Director at Chino Hills HS since 2005 and was director of percussion at Pacifica HS from 2000-2011. John joined the design team for the Blue Stars Drum & Bugle Corps as the battery arranger from 2013-2016. Previously, he worked with the Blue Devil B Corps as the percussion arranger from 2007-2012 and was the Battery Arranger/ Percussion Caption Head for the Esperanza Drum and Bugle Corps in San Diego, CA from 2002-2006. His marching experience includes Velvet Knights and Pacific Crest Drum & Bugle Corps organizations.

John is aVic Firth Signature artist, a Yamaha artist, a Remo artist, a Zildjian artist and a WGI Percussion Steering Committee/Advisory Board member. He is also a co-founder of Box-Six.com, a website compiling original indoor percussion and marching band shows with fellow composer Ian Grom.

John lives in Orange, CA.

Ian Grom, Front Ensemble Coordinator/Arranger
This is Ian’s 11th year on staff with Pulse. He is a composer and educator based out of Southern California. Ian received his Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance from California State University Long Beach, where he specialized in drum set, marimba and composition.

He currently teaches, designs, and composes for the Chino Hills HS percussion ensemble and has been there since 2010. He also instructed Pacifica HS from 2006-2011 and Los Alamitos HS from 2005 – 2011. In the summer of 2009, Ian was brought on as the electronics consultant/arranger with the world famous Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps and worked there from 2009 to 2012. Ian joined the design team for the Blue Stars Drum & Bugle Corps as the front ensemble and Co-Brass arranger from 2013-2016. He also composes original marching band shows for several HS programs around the country.

Ian is a Signature Vic Firth artist, a Yamaha artist, a Remo artist, a Zildjian artist and a WGI Percussion Advisory Board member. In the summer of 2008, he launched Box-Six.com, a website compiling original indoor percussion and marching band shows with fellow composer John Mapes.

Ian lives in Fullerton, CA.

Steven Estudillo, Design Team
This is Stevens 7th year on staff with Pulse. He was born and raised in Southern California and studied at California State University, Fullerton. He was a member of Pacific Crest Drum & Bugle Corps (2002 – 2005) and The Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps (2006 – 2008). Steven is a full time visual designer writing for marching bands and indoor drumlines all over the country. On top of being a part of the deign team at Pulsehe has been the POW Percussion’s visual designer from 2013 to the present.

Steven was the drill designer for Pacific Crest Drum & Bugle Corps from 2010-2012 and returned in 2015. He was on visual staff with The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps from 2009-2015, where he served as the Visual Caption Head. He also currently works as the drill designer and teacher at Chino Hills HS.

Steven lives in Corona, CA.

Rochelle Mapes, Choreographer

This is Rochelle’s 8th year on Pulse staff as a Choreographer where she brings a fresh perspective to the indoor percussion activity with her dance background.  Rochelle earned her Master of Arts in Dance from California State University, Long Beach and also holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance from CSULB.  She is on faculty with the Commercial Dance Conservatory at the Orange County School of the Arts, choreographs extensively for nationally ranked dance teams throughout the US, and has taught many conventions/dance camps including the United Spirit Association, Segerstrom Center for the Arts, Kids Artistic Review, Dance aTAK,  and American Ballet intensives.  She judges nationally and internationally for USA Dance and USASF Dance Worlds.  Performance credits include: BARE Dance Company, “Nip/Tuck” TV show, Gladys Knight, and she currently dances and choreographs for RhetOracle Dance Company. 

Rochelle is the operations manager for Box-Six.com and lives in Orange, CA.

Glen Crosby, Music Director
Glen has been involved with Pulse in different capacities since 2009. Glen is an independent music educator, arranger, consultant and performer with a specialization in marching percussion. Glen currently runs the marching percussion program at UCLA, works with Arcadia High School and consults with a few Drum and Bugle corps. He also offers private lessons in his lesson studio. Glen began his marching percussion career in 1981 as a performer with the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps and aged out in 1984. He went on to work with the Garfield Cadets, Santa Clara Vanguard, Velvet Knights, Capital Regiment, Glassmen, Freelancers, Blue Knights, Academy, and Carolina Crown achieving five DCI World Championships (Cadets (1985), Santa Clara Vanguard (1989, 1999), Carolina Crown (2013) and five High Percussion Awards in his various roles as a consultant, battery technician, assistant caption head, and technique manager for the Santa Clara Vanguard (1988, 1989, 1998, 2004) and the Cadets (2003).

Glen is a member of the Vic Firth Educational team, a Remo artist, a Zildjian artist, and lives in Long Beach, CA.

Ryan Anderson, Battery Manager
This is Ryan’s 9th year on staff with Pulse Percussion. Ryan started teaching at Etiwanda HS in the fall of 2014. Until then, he taught Los Alamitos and Chino Hills HS’s for many years. He has taught the Carolina Crown and Blue Devils B, Madison Scouts from 2013-2016 and most recently with the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps starting in the summer of 2016.

Ryan’s performance experience includes Esperanza Drum and Bugle Corps, RCC Marching Band, Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps (section leader 07) and RCC Winter Percussion. Ryan was also a charter member of Pulse in 2005!

He is a member of the Vic Firth educational team and lives in Chino Hills, CA.

Matt Hartwell, Staff Coordinator & Visual Caption Head
This is Matt's 2nd year on staff with Pulse. Matt has marched with Capital Regiment, The Cavaliers, and Aimachi Marching Band. Matt is a full time drill designer and teacher. He has taught The Santa Clara Vanguard since 2010 and became the visual caption head in 2017. In 2010, he had the extreme honor of designing a production for His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said al-Said’s Royal Guard of Oman Marching Band. Matt spends his month of May working as the Show Director for a Drum Corps style stage show called "Mix It Up" at Busch Gardens theme park in Williamsburg, VA. Matt is a full-time visual designer and instructor based out of Anaheim, CA.

Ezekiel Lanser, Snare Tech
This is Ezekiel’s 3rd year on staff with Pulse, but 7th year with the organization. He worked with POW Percussion from 2012 – 2015 as snare tech then as the Ensemble Coordinator. Ezekiel is a marching percussion educator and composer based out of Southern California. He is the percussion arranger, visual designer, and percussion caption head at Pacifica High School and a battery technician at Los Alamitos High School. Starting in 2015, Ezekiel joined The Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps as a snare tech.

Ezekiel’s performance credits include marching with Momentum Percussion Theater, the UNT A-Line, Pulse Percussion, The Seattle Cascades, Esperanza, and The Phantom Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps. He was formerly on staff with The Boston Crusaders and Phantom Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps. He earned his percussion performance degree from The University of North Texas in 2010.

He is a member of the Vic Firth education team and lives in Huntington Beach, CA

Connor Yasuda, Snare Tech
This is Connor’s 2nd year on staff with Pulse Percussion. Connor attended Los Alamitos high school from 2008-2011. His performance experience includes the Mandarins Drum & Bugle Corps, the Blue Stars Drum & Bugle Corps, and aged out with the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps. He was a member of POW Percussion in 2012 and continued with Pulse Percussion from 2013-2015. He is currently the snare tech for the Blue Stars Drum & Bugle Corps starting in 2015, worked with POW in 2016 and currently teaches a few local high school programs. Connor currently attends Cal State Long Beach as a film student.

Fred Han, Tenor Tech
This is Fred’s 5th year on staff with Pulse. Fred’s performance experience includes Pulse Percussion from 2008-2011. He was also a member of Pacific Crest, The Academy and the Yamato Drum and Bugle Corps. He currently teaches San Marino HS and is a graduated of UCLA.

Fred lives in Carson, CA.

Sean Knuth, Tenor Tech
This is Sean’s 4th year on staff with Pulse. He currently teaches at La Canada High School in Southern California. He has also taught at the Academy Drum and Bugle Corps in 2011, the Blue Knights from 2012-2013, and currently the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps, starting in 2014.

Sean started his drum corps career in 2008 marching tenors with the Vanguard Cadets. After a successful season, he marched tenors with the Santa Clara Vanguard A Corps in 2009 and aged out with them in 2010. Sean graduated California State University, Northridge with a degree in Music Industry Studies.

Sean lives in Simi Valley, CA.

Joeseph Martinez, Bass Drum Tech
This is Joey’s 5th year on staff with Pulse. As a bass tech he has taught the Blue Devils B corps in 2012, the Blue Devil A corps in 2013 and has spent the last 4 years with the the Phantom Regiment.

His performance experience includes the Blue Devils Drum & Bugle corps, Blue Devils B, RCC Winter Percussion Ensemble and Pulse Percussion. Joey has a BA in Business Accountancy from Fresno State and recently finished a Single Subject Teaching Credential in Business, also from Fresno State. He is currently a classroom teacher at Clovis West High School and teaches CTE Banking & Finance.

Richie Rodriguez, Bass Drum Tech
This is Richie's 2nd year on staff with Pulse Percussion. His performance experience includes the Santa Clara Vanguard, Pacific Crest, and RCC Winter Percussion. 

He has been on staff with the Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps, Vanguard Winter Percussion and currently with the Santa Clara Vanguard since 2014. 

Richie currently lives in Cypress, Ca. 

Derek Wu, Cymbal Tech
This is Derek’s 3rd year with Pulse but 4th year with the organization. He was on staff with POW percussion in 2014 and 2015. His performance experience includes The Santa Clara Vanguard Drum & Bugle Corps 2012, The Academy Drum & Bugle Corps 2010 and 2011 (Section Leader) as well as RCC Winter Drumline 2012 and Pulse Percussion 2009 – 2011 (Section Leader).

Derek graduated from Cal Poly Pomona last year with a B.S. focused in Computer Information Systems. Along side teaching various schools throughout Southern California, Derek currently works full-time in Ontario, CA.

Derek currently lives in Chino, CA.

Kevin Sticht, Cymbal Tech
This will be Kevin’s 2nd year on staff with Pulse Percussion. Kevin spent his first three years of his DCI career marching with the Mandarins Drum & Bugle Corps (2011-2013) and his last two years as a DCI finalist with Crossmen Drum & Bugle Corps (2014-2015). He has also performed with POW Percussion in 2012 and Pulse Percussion from 2013-2016.

Kevin graduated from California State University, Fullerton with a Bachelors of Music in Percussion Performance in the Spring 2016. His teaching experience has been as a percussion caption head, drill writer, and has taught a marching percussion symposium.

Jonathan Zuniga, Front Ensemble staff

Jonathan Zuniga is an instructor and composer from Southern California and is the Assistant Front Ensemble Arranger for Box Six. He has worked with several WGI/SCPA indoor ensembles including Pulse Percussion since 2010, Los Alamitos High School 2011-2016, La Quinta High School 2016-present, and Chino Hills Winter Drumline 2013, 2016-present. Jonathan is currently the Front Ensemble Arranger and is on the Design Team of the 2017 Pacific Crest season and is excited to join George Mason Univeersity for their 2018 seson . His past instructional experience in DCI includes Academy 2011, Cadets 2012, and the Blue Stars 2013-2016.

Jonathan's performance experience includes the Arizona Academy Drum and Bugle Corps 2007, RCC Winter Drumline 2009 and the Blue Devils Drum & Bugle Corps 2008.

Jonathan is a member of the Vic Firth and Remo Educational team and lives in Sunny, Southern California.

Kyle Traska, Front Ensemble staff
This is Kyle's 3rd year on staff with Pulse. He is a native of Wisconsin and has been living and working in Southern California since the fall of 2012. Kyle has worked with percussion ensembles in the marching, classical, and world settings and is an active performing musician in the greater Los Angeles area. Kyle's marching experience includes seasons with the Oregon Marching Band (now Shadow Drum and Bugle Corps), the Lacrosse Blue Stars, and the Green Bay Packer's Tundraline. 

Kyle holds a Bachelor's in Music Performance degree from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin and arranges for and teachers percussion at University High School and Mater Dei High School.

Brianne Kikuchi, Front Ensemble staff
This is Brianne’s first year on staff with Pulse Percussion. She recently taught with POW Percussion in 2016 & 2017 and Pacific Crest Drum and Bugle Corps in 2017. Brianne’s performance experience includes Pacific Crest Drum & Bugle Corps, The Blue Stars Drum & Bugle Corps, POW Percussion in 2012 and Pulse Percussion from 2013-2015.

She is currently working on her Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance from California State University Long Beach.

Erick Urbina, Front ensemble staff

This is Eric’s first year on staff with Pulse Percussion. He was a member of POW Percussion in 2013 and with Pulse Percussion from 2014-2017. He also was a member of the RCC fall ensemble from 2012-2014.

Eric is currently a full time front ensemble instructor and arranger. Heteaches at Chino Hills HS, Townsend Junior HS,  Alta Loma HS and Sierra Vista HS. He is also the front ensemble arrange for Alta Loma HS, Sierra Vista HS, and Velocity Percussion starting for the indoor 2018 season.

Chris Cowling, Visual staff
This is Chris's 2nd year on teaching staff but has been around since 2014 as a Board Member and officer. Chris is a marching arts professional and drill designer based out of Southern California. He has taught, designed, and consulted with numerous ensembles such as Gladstone, Monrovia, Patriot, Rubidoux, Jurupa Valley, Diamond Bar, Los Altos, and Vista Murrieta. Currently, he is on the instructional staff of El Dorado High School and Chino Hills High School.

Chris was a visual staff member at Pacific Crest Drum and Bugle Corps from 2007 to 2012, Caption Head from 2010 to 2012 and, after a short break, returned to Pacific Crest for the 2015 and 2016 season. He joined Santa Clara Vanguard's visual staff for the 2016 season .

In his free time Chris likes to work on his 1965 Mustang and go to car shows. He lives in Mira Loma, CA.
